Richa Rogan
Some would call Richa Rogan an International student as she has lived abroad in many countries from a young age. One of her fondest memories from her teenage years is a trip she took to New Orleans with her father at the age of 16. They stayed in the south for 3 months visiting countless jazz clubs where they soaked up the music and the culture. For those of us who know and love swing dancing, understand that first visceral reaction to jazz music is intoxicating. And with Richa watching swing dancing in those clubs, she instinctually understood how swing dancing is one of the best ways to express her joy of the music.
Back in Sydney and a little older, Richa first learnt from Derek and Trish Carruthers when they were teaching for Swing Katz. Swing Patrol had not arrived in Sydney yet, which means that Richa can call herself one of the original Sydney Swing Patrollers; she was in the very first Sydney SP class in St Peters!
For those of you who know and love Richa well can testify that one of her character strengths is her determination and tenacity. She won ‘Up n Comers’ at the first Sydney Jitterbug Championships and then in 2004 started her cadetship with Scott Cupit, where they formed a wonderful; teaching partnership which lasted 3 years.
Richa takes her creative dancing influences from both Australian and International dancers; Sarah Farrelly, Cam Mitchell, Skye Humphries and Frida Segerdahl to name but a few. Though Richa would disagree stubbornly, she now is known as a wonderful aerialist, a joyful swing dancer, a generous teacher and is always thinking about how she can make her dancing better.
Richa teaches at Paddington RSL every Tuesday night and is a member of Savoy Stomp.
**Richa recently appeared on Channel 9 on the Kerri-Anne show. Check out the footage at: www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9KxffIjMYY
"Hi Scott, I just wanted to say thank you for your help with our function on Sat, Dec 10. Richa and Justine were brilliant - absolutely fantastic and everybody got into the spirit - including the rest of the restaurant patrons not part of our group! Have a wonderful Christmas and New Year! We'll definitely be recommending Swing Patrol left, right and centre!" - Lulu
