When I first discovered swing dancing, I was oblivious to the vast scope of styles available. Over time I have explored blues and solo jazz to learn new moves and ways to express myself, but my recent love is Balboa. My first encounter with Bal was stumbling over my partner’s feet as I tried to shuffle along with no knowledge of any of the steps. I slowly realised that this was not something I could learn on the social dance floor.
So over time I began to go to classes and workshops and started to appreciate the subtleties of this style of dance. For me, Bal is a dance where I forget about all the distractions around me and commit myself to listening to my partner. In North Sydney we’ve started regular beginner and intermediate Bal classes once a month and I’m excited to be teaching with Max, who taught me some of my very first Bal steps. We're kicking off our monthly Bal class on Tuesday February 14 – hope to see you there!

3. Swing dancing Gig Guide… thanks Ben!
Can you believe January is gone already?! This first week of February back up the Swing Patrol Petersham launch party with Swingin' the Boogie at Camelot on Thursday. Then Swing at the Roxbury on Saturday night before heading down to Unity Hall for the Dan Barnett Big Band on Sunday afternoon. February also means it's only a few months before I jet off to Nepal for a year - that means I'll be looking for some help to keep the gig guide running and an ear to the ground for all the cool musics. Drop me a line if you're interested. All this weeks details are on my blog.
