Meet the Scene Ball

The first event off the year to welcome all our new swing dancers. These are great nights to meet everyone at Swing Patrol as well as socialise with the people in your own classes. A night not to be missed!

This party is always the highlight of the year and a great opportunity to meet everyone involved in other Swing Patrol classes and the Sydney scene.   We have a range of fantastic dj’s planned and many strolls/games to keep you entertained - Shim Sham, Jitterbug Stroll, Big Apple.... make sure to jump in.
This event is the most loved event on our calendar and is dedicated to all our newer dancers.  This is the night that all our dancers come together and welcome you to the Sydney SP Swing Community.  Everyone who has gone before knows the nerves of a first ball and the anticipation.  Just relax, take a chill pill and have a great time on the night.  If you’re worried that you do not know many people, remember everyone is in this situation.  With so many new people in the scene, even the dancers of old do not know many people. What a great opportunity to meet new like minded swing lovers.

When you are new to a "Swing Scene", we’ve found that a fun thing to do at huge events is to color code the venues. It doesn't mean you have to wear a green zoot suit...it just means a "touch of" colour so you can easily find your buddies that you learn with each week! Everyone has been given a regional colour so you can also get to know your nearest neighbours.

Venue Colours
Balmain LIGHT BLUE
Blues AQUA
Broadway BRIGHT GREEN
Castle Hill BROWN
Concord YELLOW
Cronulla BRIGHT BLUE
Friends of Swing Patrol** GOLD
Newtown RED
North Sydney PURPLE
Paddington SILVER

** those who are not specific to a venue

DJ Music
We’ll have a number of dj’s spinning the tunes on the night:
DJ Laura Knight grew up working in a record shop and is known for her obsession with music and a special love for the swing tunes. After DJ-ing for many years at Indy & house nights DJ Laura has recently turned her attention to her beloved swing music and is a regular DJ at events such as the London Swing Pit in Brick Lane. This will be her first visit to Australia and all she knows about Oz is what she has learnt off ‘Neighbours’. With a massive collection you are guaranteed to hear some cool new tunes during her set.
As one of the newer DJs in the Sydney scene Ben Beccari likes to keep things simple, focusing on hard-swinging music with plenty of hotness that makes you tap your feet, puts a smile on your face and gets you up dancing. He plays mostly Big Band swing from the 30s and early 40s, rhythm and blues and jump blues from the 40s and early 50s and contemporary swing bands that play for dancers. Some of his favourite artists are Lionel Hampton, Lucky Millinder, Fats Waller, Slim and Slam and Count Basie plus contemporary bands like Gordon Webster, Solomon Douglas and the Boilermaker Jazz Band.
Max Pogonowski has been DJ-ing just over 2 years in & after class and at various Swing Patrol social nights in Sydney. His first goal is to fill the floor, playing music people love to dance to at a variety of speeds, with people jumping up out of their seats (where they only just sat down) on a regular basis, with that "I love this song!" look on their faces. Every now and then, it's great to put on a challenging song for the more experienced dancers, be it a fast, high energy song likely to start a jam circle, or something with a bit more fluid timing.

Meet the Scene Ball – FAQ’s
Q: Information for Ticket Holders!
If you’ve been super organised and pre-paid your ticket to the ball… well done. You’re going to have a ball… literally! Remember, there are no paper tickets for you to collect. Instead, your name will be on a special door list. Just walk in, say hi to our friendly door girls and they will cross you off the pre-paid list before you enter the ball. If you have booked your tickets in a group, then your tickets will be under the name of the person who booked/paid for them. Make sure you know what name your ticket will be under before you turn up, just to avoid any confusion at the door.

Q: Food and Drink at the Ball
You are welcome to bring along any drinks or food that you want to nibble on during the night. We won't have formal caters in attendance... so pack a picnic hamper and bring it along!

Q: Table Seating
There will be some tables around the venue but these are not reserved or regarded as permanent seating for anyone throughout the night. They are used to help orientate you to colours and areas in the room where your class-colleagues will be and from there you can dance, grab a chair when you’re arresting or if there is no chair available, sit on someone’s lap and make a new friend. Better still. Get back onto the dance floor!!

Q: What Do I Wear?
Many will have planned and made this decision already, but if you need tips the number one thing is to have comfy shoes to dance in. Many will be dressed up for the night and we encourage this. Swirly skirts, flip dresses, zoot suits, baggy pants, braces and even maybe the odd fedora hat might and an original vintage item might be seen on the night. There will also be lots of people not so dressed up wearing contemporary smart casual clothing. Beware of sore feet the next day.. . many of those who have done this before bring a change of clothes for later in the night. Also, you could put together a dance bag with all that’s needed to freshen up, repair some feet or deal with wardrobe malfunctions!
