Week 2 (of 2) 1920's Charleston in Level 1 & 2 cool new moves in Level 2

Swing Patrol Broadway Christmas Party: Wed 15 Dec!

  • 6:30-7:30pm - Combined Level 1 & 2 class: "Decorating" your dancing
  • 7:30 'til late - Drinks/nibbles and social dancing (FREE!)
    • 7:30-9pm - DJ Ben Beccari - Ben has an awesome collection of tunes and will keep the floor jumping.
    • 9pm 'til late: SPEAKEASY! We have the wonderful Allison Payne playing some blues tunes and we'll be turning the lights down low...
  • BYO drinks and a plate to share
  • Venue: Studio A - upstairs from our normal class venue in the large room usually occupied by the salsa dancers
  • Address: Cleveland Street Theatre, 199 Cleveland Street - opposite Prince Alfred Park

Coming up on Wed 8 Dec:

Level 1 (6:30pm):
Blues dancing class - Basics
  • No experience needed, start anytime
  • Come and learn the basics of blues dancing. Blues dancing is perfect for those slower tempo songs that you may currently struggle with.
Level 2 (7:45pm):
Blues dancing class - Drags/rag doll
  • We can advise whether you're ready to move to level 2
  • Drags look and feel great and are super-smooth!

 

On Wed 1 Dec we learnt the following in Level 1 and Level 2:

Level 1
1920's Charleston Week 2 (of 2)
  • 1920's Charleston basic
    • Tap, step, tap, step
    • On count 1: Leads tap back with left foot, follows tap forward with right
    • Leads, take a confident step so the sollows can feel the difference from the tap
  • Side-by-side Charleston basic
    • Rock-step (outside leg), kick, step, kick, hitch, kick, land
  • Entry into 1920's Charleston from Side-by-side Charleston
    • Leads offer the hand
    • Rock-step, then bring the follow in front and tap forward with right leg on 5 and step back on 7
    • Ready to tap backwards (1920's Charleston basic) with left leg on 1 of the following 8 count
  • Exit from 1920's Charleston back to Side-by-side Charleston
    • Tap, step, tap, pivot follow 180 degrees clockwise into side-by-side Charleston position
    • Leads, use your left hand connection to push follows away and use right hand connection to pivot
  • Heel Toe
    • Bring follow in closer on count 8
    • Leads, raise follows right hand (your left) higher, lean to the left and tap your left heel forward while follow taps her right heel forward between your legs and then return your heel tapping leg back to neutral
    • Repeat the above but lean to the right and tap with the opposite foot, this time with the lead tapping his right heel between the follow's legs
    • Stand up straight (to neutral) and tap back with left foot to exit into 1920's basic
Level 2
2 cool moves
  • Go for a stroll
    • 1-4 of swing out basic the same
    • On 5, leads step backwards and rotate follows left side forward
    • On 6, leads pivot follows right side forward and block her forward momentum with your left hand
    • Use the energy from this block and also the connection on her left shoulder to put follow into a forward clockwise 180 degrees turn for 7-8 while still travelling backwards and collect in closed ready to swing out
  • 6 beat "basketball trick" move
    • From cross-hand hold (right hand to right hand facing each other), lead follow on a linear rock-step
    • Bring follow directly towards your centre/right-side in a 180 degree anti-clockwise turn (triple step) on 3-4
    • "Catch" follow with inside of your right arm and send her back from where she came in a 180 degree anti-clockwise turn (triple step) on 5-6
